Beyond his decades-long career as an academic and debate moderator, Pappaiah briefly crossed over into mainstream Tamil cinema, where he gained significant popularity. Despite the massive visibility and lucrative opportunities that followed his cinematic appearances, Pappaiah made a conscious decision to step away from the film industry.
Following his high-profile roles, the scholar received more than 200 acting offers from various filmmakers. However, he turned down every single one of them to focus entirely on his literary and academic pursuits. Addressing his brief stint in cinema during an interview with The Hindu in 2022, Pappaiah explained his rationale for declining further roles:
"I harboured that desire [to act] and did some projects. I was treated with utmost respect in the film industry. I got more than 200 film offers after that, but I do not see myself there, but rather in literary and academic circles."

Pappaiah’s journey in front of the camera was selective. After a brief appearance as a magistrate in director S. Shankar's 2003 coming-of-age film Boys, he was cast in Shankar's 2007 blockbuster Sivaji: The Boss, starring Superstar Rajinikanth.
In the film, Pappaiah played the memorable role of Thondaiman, a wealthy prospective father-in-law. The sequence revolves around Sivaji (played by Rajinikanth) visiting Thondaiman's house during a matchmaking bride-seeing ritual for his daughters, Angavai and Sangavai.
