‘Jana Nayagan’ Leak Case: Over 1.2 Crore People Illegally Watched Vijay's Farewell Film, Police Tell Madras High Court
Madras High Court denies bail to accused in 'Jana Nayagan' leak case as Chennai police report 1.2 crore illegal views for Vijay's farewell film. Actor-turned-politician Vijay's uncertified movie, directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, was illegally watched by millions after leaking on April 9, 2026, prompting an ongoing police investigation into the massive piracy racket.
The highly anticipated farewell film of actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay, Jana Nayagan, has been embroiled in a massive piracy scandal, with Chennai police revealing to the Madras High Court that approximately 1.2 crore (12 million) people illegally viewed the movie online even before its official certification and release. This shocking disclosure came on Thursday, July 2, 2026, during a bail hearing that saw the court refuse relief to two key accused in the case. ‘Jana Nayagan’ Release Date: Thalapathy Vijay’s Farewell Film To Finally Hit Theatres THIS Month After CBFC Clearance.
Madras High Court Refuses Bail in ‘Jana Nayagan’ Leak Row
Justice C Kumarappan of the Madras High Court dismissed the bail petitions filed by S Rajini, identified as the fourth accused, and Jayaprakash, the eleventh accused, citing the gravity of the allegations and the ongoing nature of the investigation. The prosecution strongly opposed the bail pleas, emphasising that releasing the accused at this critical juncture could impede the probe and potentially lead to evidence tampering or influence on witnesses.
Police informed the court that the pirated version of 'Jana Nayagan' began circulating on April 9, 2026, well before it had received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The illegal distribution, allegedly initiated by a freelance film editor who copied footage onto a hard drive and uploaded it to Google Drive, rapidly spread across piracy websites like Tamil Rockers, reaching millions of viewers.
Police to Continue Investigation for Absconding Parties
The Chennai Cyber Crime Wing's investigation is still very much active. The prosecution highlighted that only a preliminary chargesheet has been filed, and the police are yet to complete their full inquiry before submitting the final chargesheet. Crucially, the court was informed that two other accused individuals remain absconding. Their apprehension is deemed vital for tracing the financial transactions linked to the alleged piracy network and unearthing further details of the sophisticated operation.
The film's producers, KVN Productions, had previously taken legal action, securing an interim injunction from the Madras High Court. This order directed internet service providers to block unauthorised access to the leaked film, though by then, authorities estimate the illegal viewership had already reached monumental figures.
