Accredited social health activists (ASHA) commonly known as Asha workers have been struggling for the last two years to change the name of the condom brand 'Asha Nirodh' which they distribute in several areas for the sake of family planning. National Health Mission state office confirmed the change in the name from Asha Nirodh to Nirodh from July. According to reports, because of the name, the workers were hurled vulgar taunted and it was getting very embarrassing for them in front of others.

The family members of these women workers also urged them to stop working or wait till the name Asha gets dropped from the brand of condom. As part of the protest, Asha workers refused to distribute these condoms ton several districts. According to a Hindustan Times report, the protests started from Seoni and then had spread to several other districts. Social Workers Threaten to Go to Court if Name Not Changed

The matter was discussed in detail during a meeting in New Delhi, and the officers from Madhya Pradesh requested the name Asha to be dropped because they felt ashamed in distributing the condoms and it was hampering their work. Their protests have yielded results as the new packets don't have the word Asha on it.
