Vizianagaram, Apr 17: A disabled woman in her mid twenties was allegedly gang raped by a three-member gang in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday evening. The perpetrators included a rickshaw driver and two of his friends who assaulted the 24-year-old at the Nellimarla Industrial Development Area (IDA).

According to media reports, the woman was on her way to her sister's house  when she was attacked by the gang. Although the rape took place on Sunday evening at 7: 30 pm, it was brought to notice only on Monday. DSP Ramana told the media that the woman had boarded the perpetrator's rickshaw after her relatives failed to turn up. They were supposed to have dropped her to her sister's place near the forest office in the Phool Bagh area of Vizianagaram.

Two others were already present in the rickshaw when the young woman boarded the rickshaw. She sensed trouble when the rickshaw driver refused to stop and Phool Bagh and kept driving towards IDA. They took her to the bushes and violated her. The woman's screams alerted a motorist who happened to pass by and the attackers fled after they spotted him.

Two cases, one of rape and the other under SC/ST Atrocities Act was registered in the Nellimara police station. As of now, the authorities are in the process of verifying the victim's statement since there were some discrepancies in her story. A team to grab the culprits have been already deployed, the to SP of Vizianagaram told TNN.
