Shillong, June 1: Curfew has been imposed in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong after a clash between Shillong Transport Public Service (STPS) drivers and Them Aew Mawlong area residents escalated. Reports inform that the clash escalated after a bus conductor was allegedly assaulted by residents on Thursday.

The curfew was imposed at 4 am today and will remain in force till further orders, East Khasi Hills District Deputy Commissioner P S Dkhar said. Trouble escalated when rumours spread on social media that the conductor had succumbed to injuries, prompting a group of bus drivers to converged at Them Metor.

The authorities clamped curfew in parts of the city after rumours went viral on social media about the death of a tribal man. The Meghlaya Police then sprung into actions and pacified the clash by using teargas. The injured ones were rushed to Shillong Civil Hospital. The East Khasi Hills district administration then imposed curfew in 14 parts of the city on Friday morning.

Deputy Commissioner Peter S Dkhar was quoted by News 18 that the the curfew was promulgated at 4 am on Friday in Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Raitsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lama Villa, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hills, Cantolment and Mawlong Hat”. He added that it will continue till further orders.

According to a PTI report, the curfew was promulgated to prevent the breakdown of law and order in the state capital, the official said. The areas where curfew has been imposed include localities under the Lum Dieng Jri Police Station and the Cantonment Beat House.
