Ratnagiri, June 3: In a shocking incident, at least six people have lost their lives after drowning in a beach in Ratnagiri. According to a recent tweet by ANI, the mishap took place on Sunday. More details are awaited.

For the unversed, Maharashtra has 78 beaches that extend up to a 720-km coastline in Mumbai city and the suburbs (10), Thane and Palghar (6), Raigad (15), Ratnagiri (26) and Sindhudurg (21).

According to a report in DNA, Maharashtra was to get its first-ever designated safe zones for swimmers on beaches to boost coastal safety. The report further said that these are being planned at the popular Ganpatipule beach in Ratnagiri district and Chivla in Sindhudurg to prevent drowning deaths.

Earlier this year in February, Abhijit Ghorpade, resident deputy collector (RDC), Ratnagiri, had said they had envisaged a demarcated zone for swimmers on the Ganpatipule beach. Also, it was reported that th Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) was also planning a “safe swimming zone” by March-end at Chivla.
