The city of Mumbai proudly carries the tag of 'a city that never sleeps.' There is a constant buzz around the city, day or night. Called the maximum city, it functions round the clock. And this very attribute of the city dwellers has given it a new record, of working the hardest. A new study conducted by Swiss investment bank UBS has revealed that Mumbaikars work the longest in the world. On an average, an employee in Mumbai works 3,315 hours a year, which is the largest in the world.
The Swiss Investment Bank assessed 77 cities around the world for their Price And Earnings 2018 report. They did an analysis on a number of parameters which had average working hours among one. The study found out that along with Mumbai the cities of Hanoi, Mexico City, New Delhi and Bogota put in most working hours. Among the cities that have the record for lowest working hours are employees of Helsinki, Moscow, Copenhagen, Paris, Rome and Lagos.
The report is based on data studied for four months- January to April 2018. It also states that because of the long working hours, there are very few vacationers in the city. The longest vacation leaves were not more than 10. But in that category, there were also the cities of Los Angeles, Beijing, Hanoi and Lagos. Riyadh topped the list with people taking 37 leaves a year. Employees of Moscow, St Petersburg, Barcelona and Doha took more than a month of leaves per year. Maybe we Mumbaikars, really do need that break we keep talking of every few days!
On comparing the compensation for putting in long hours of work, it was observed that a Mumbaikar will have to log in almost 900 hours to buy an iPhone X. Cairo needs the most working hours to be able to afford any Apple product. Lucky are the ones from Zurich, who could work for 38 hours and get themselves an iPhone X! While the ones in Los Angeles, Miami and Nicosia have to put in less than 100 hours to get themselves an expensive smartphone. The bank compared the products which are on the most 'want to buy' list of the millennials. But one from Mumbai will really have to slog to get their hands on any.
