Mumbai, June 12: Veteran Shiv Sena leader Bharat Raut daughter named Shreya Raut has become paraplegic after a branch of Gulmohar tree fell on her body on June 9. According to a news report in The Times of India, the 20-year-old engineering student has been feeling no sensation below the waist after the tragic incident. Vishakha Raut, the corporator of the ward where the incident occurred, visited the victim in hospital and shared details about her well-being. She was quoted as saying, "The girl underwent a seven-hour-long surgery. Her recovery may take time, and there is no way of knowing how much she will recover."
The civic body drew a lot of flak after the incident for being unable to prune unhealthy trees, especially during monsoons. Opposition party leaders also attacked the BMC for covering the area surrounding trees with cement paver blocks which led the trees to get uprooted easily during heavy winds. Rais Shaikh in the civic meeting pointed out paver block as one of the major reasons behind such tragic incidents. He said, "In case of the Dadar incident also, the area around the tree had been completely covered with paver blocks, thereby choking it."
On June 11, the girl along with four others sustained injuries after a giant Gulmohar tree got uprooted due to gusty winds and fell on them. Shreya, in the mishap, sustained a severe injury on her spine.
BMC supervisor at the site, Vilas Kamble, who was monitoring the trimming of trees in the area after the incident, said, that they were not able to cut trees in time, due to double parking in the narrow lanes as per the news report in The Free Press Journal.
Earlier too similar incidents of trees falling were reported in Mumbai during the onset of monsoons. In a related incident, a civic sweeper was partially paralysed after a tree fell upon him. Also, a 91-year-old woman of Walkeshwar Sukhi Lilaji succumbed to severe head injury.
