Police Deny Permission for Shivaji Park Gathering
The CJP had earlier planned to hold the October 2 protest at Shivaji Park, but Mumbai Police denied permission, citing existing restrictions on gatherings at the ground, the absence of mandatory civic permission, and concerns over traffic disruption.
Following the denial of clearance for the ground in Dadar, Dipke announced a "Jail Bharo Andolan", or mass voluntary arrest campaign, on Gandhi Jayanti instead of the planned rally. Addressing reporters at the Mumbai Press Club earlier on Thursday, Dipke affirmed that the outfit would continue its demonstrations until the Chief Election Commissioner stepped down, adding that protests were also being planned across Goa, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.
The agitation by the CJP follows reports of internal differences within the Election Commission concerning procedures and decisions related to the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls.
The Election Commission previously clarified that differing views and internal observations represent a routine aspect of institutional deliberations and emphasized that its directives carry full legal sanction. Mumbai Police have maintained strict preventive vigil across South and Central Mumbai to prevent unauthorized public assemblies and preempt potential traffic gridlock ahead of October 2 events.
