Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil has accepted an invitation for a meal extended by Amruta Fadnavis, wife of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, clarifying that he would visit her home during the festival of Bhaubeej rather than in the middle of his ongoing agitation.
Addressing reporters at his primary protest site in Antarwali Sarati village, Jalna district, Jarange Patil stated that he recognized the invitation was made with good intentions and affection. However, he emphasized that his immediate priority remains the fight for the Maratha community's reservation demands under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. A Gesture of Kinship Amid Ongoing Protests
The exchange began when Amruta Fadnavis, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Nagpur, publicly referred to Jarange Patil as her "brother" and extended an invitation for him to visit their home for a meal. Her comments came against the backdrop of heightened political activity and public focus on the Maratha quota movement.
Acknowledging the gesture, Jarange Patil urged that people should not misinterpret acts of goodwill. He gave his word that he would honor the invitation by visiting her home on Bhaubeej—a festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters—and bring a traditional gift.
Focus Remains Firmly on Quota Demands
Despite accepting the invitation in spirit, the activist made it clear that visiting during an active hunger strike would send the wrong signal to the supporters and families reliant on the movement. "If someone is speaking with good intentions, there is no need to question it every time," Jarange Patil stated. He added that accepting a meal invitation while actively leading a battle from the protest venue would be equivalent to stepping down from the fight, which he said he cannot do while protesting for poor families.
Background of the Agitation
Jarange Patil has been spearheading the Maratha reservation movement, demanding Kunbi caste certificates for eligible Marathas based on historical Hyderabad and Satara gazette records. His repeated fasts and public rallies in Antarwali Sarati have kept pressure on the state government to resolve legal and administrative aspects surrounding the quota allocation.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis previously stated that the state administration remains committed to exploring all legally permissible frameworks under the Constitution to address the community’s concerns through continuous dialogue.
