Bareilly Hospital Fire: Around 80 Patients Evacuated After Blaze Breaks Out on Top Floor

A fire broke out on the fourth floor of the five-storey Navodaya Hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly on Saturday morning, prompting the evacuation of around 80 patients and triggering panic among patients, attendants and hospital staff. No casualties or injuries were reported, according to a report.

The blaze was reported at around 10 a.m. during busy outpatient hours. Thick smoke spread through parts of the building after the fire started in a room on the top floor. Patients Evacuated From Hospital

Hospital staff immediately began moving patients out of the building after the fire alarms were activated. Critically ill patients were taken out on stretchers, while attendants carried newborns to safety. According to police, around 80 patients were admitted to the hospital at the time. The fourth floor, where the fire originated, was reportedly not occupied by patients.

Fire Brought Under Control

Firefighters faced difficulties because of the heavy smoke inside the building. Officials said four to five people who were trapped on an upper floor were brought down safely through the staircase.

The fire department said the blaze was brought under control after firefighting efforts. Some reports initially said the flames were contained within about 30 minutes, while the fire department's later account cited roughly two hours of efforts before the situation was fully brought under control. No patients, hospital staff or other people were reported injured.

Short Circuit Suspected

A short circuit in an MCV box is suspected to have triggered the fire, although the exact cause has not yet been established. Hospital owner Umesh Gangwar said the fire started in a rest room on the top floor, where sofas and other furniture were present. He said the material contributed to the spread of the fire and the heavy smoke.

Fire officials said an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the blaze and assess the hospital's fire-safety arrangements.

Patients Shifted to Nearby Facilities

Following the evacuation, relatives gathered outside the hospital seeking information about family members who had been moved to other facilities. The hospital administration arranged for patients to be transferred to nearby hospitals, where staff accompanied them to continue monitoring their treatment. Officials are also inspecting the hospital's entry and exit routes and checking its fire-safety systems as part of the ongoing assessment.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are now examining the circumstances that led to the fire and whether all required safety measures were in place. The incident comes amid renewed attention on fire safety at healthcare facilities following several recent hospital fires in different parts of the country. In Bareilly, however, officials said the prompt evacuation of patients helped prevent casualties in Saturday's incident.
