A 32-year-old Delhi Police constable, who was on the run after allegedly shooting his wife dead on a roadside in East Delhi’s Kalyanpuri, was found dead on Tuesday in an apparent suicide. The body of the accused, identified as Manish Bhati, was discovered behind a prominent hotel in the Mayur Vihar area. According to police sources, Bhati died from a gunshot wound to the head, and investigators suspect he turned his own service pistol on himself—the same weapon allegedly used in the murder of his wife.
The search for Bhati began in the early hours of Monday morning following the fatal shooting of his 34-year-old wife, Priyanka Bhati. The victim worked as a computer science teacher at a private school, and the incident occurred just hours after the couple had celebrated her birthday. According to the preliminary investigation, the couple was travelling on a scooter around 3:00 AM on Monday when a domestic argument escalated. Investigators recovered CCTV footage from the area showing the couple stopping by the roadside and engaging in a heated altercation near a Metro pillar in Kalyanpuri.
Police stated that Bhati then pulled out his service weapon, shot his wife in the chest, and fled the scene. A passing pizza delivery executive and other bystanders discovered the injured woman and rushed her to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in an autorickshaw, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Following the shooting, the Delhi Police formed multiple search teams to track Bhati's movements across the national capital and neighboring Haryana. Bhati, who joined the force in 2022, was posted with the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of the East District. Delhi: Husband Snooped for Affair, Strangled 18-Year-Old Wife; Arrested.
The victim’s family has since alleged that Priyanka had been subjected to frequent domestic abuse and harassment regarding dowry demands since their marriage in 2023. A murder case has been registered, and a magisterial inquiry has been initiated, which is mandatory under Indian law for cases where a spouse dies within seven years of marriage. Authorities are continuing to verify statements from family members and neighbors to piece together the exact timeline leading to the two deaths.
