Heavy rainfall lashed Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR), causing widespread waterlogging, severe traffic congestion, and disruptions to air travel. The intense spell of rain brought key stretches across the city to a crawl, subduing major arterial roads and prompting weather officials to issue weather alerts across the capital region.
According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall varied significantly across the national capital. Janakpuri recorded the highest precipitation at 67 mm, followed by Chhatarpur at 57 mm, Pitampura at 35 mm, and Safdarjung at 29 mm. The sudden downpour led to deep water accumulation on crucial routes, including ITO, Mathura Road, Connaught Place, Lutyens' Delhi, and the Zakhira underpass. Heavy Rains Trigger Severe Waterlogging Across Delhi; AAP Leader Saurabh Bharadwaj Targets BJP.
Vehicular movement was severely restricted in commercial and residential districts. Visuals from Old Delhi’s Sadar Bazar and South Delhi’s Sangam Vihar showed commuters and vehicles struggling to navigate flooded streets. In Gurugram, major junctions like Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, and sections of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway witnessed heavy inundation, prompting the district administration to issue a work-from-home advisory for corporate offices.
Air operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport were also affected due to low visibility and stormy conditions. At least 15 Delhi-bound flights were diverted to nearby airports, including Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Lucknow. Major carriers, including IndiGo and Air India, issued advisories urging passengers to check their flight status before traveling to the airport.
The severe waterlogging has once again raised questions regarding the city's drainage infrastructure and seasonal desilting efforts. Civic bodies deployed municipal personnel and mobile water pumps across flood-prone low-lying areas to clear choked drains and facilitate traffic flow. Delhi Weather Forecast & Update for Today, Tuesday, 25 August 2026: Expect Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain, High of 32°C.
