Mumbai, November 14: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed 10 per cent cut in water supply across Mumbai as levels of the seven lakes that supply potable water to the city dipped this year. The proposal will be placed before the standing committee today. If it gets the nod, Mumbaikars will have to face cut in the supply of water.

Levels of the seven lakes are at nearly 77 per cent as compared to 93 per cent last year. Levels are lowest since 2016 when lakes had 89 per cent stock in November. On Sunday, Mumbai's water stock was 11.11 lakh million litres. However, in 2017, it was 13.33 lakh million litres on the same day. Mumbai received a meagre 73mm of rain in September this year, lowest in last 27 years.

"The 10% cut would be uniform for the entire city, including commercial and residential structures. If we don't reduce supply, we may have to dip into the reserves in the lakes," a civic official told TOI. The last time Mumbai witnessed a cut in the water supply was in 2015. The BMC had imposed 20 per cent water cut from September.

The civic body had earlier hinted at rotating water supply in the financial capital. The city has got only 20 per cent of the required rainfall. Several areas such as Cuffe Parade, Juhu, Andheri, Fort, Nagpada, Dongri and Bandra have been witnessing either zero supply or low pressure since a month.
