Srinagar, December 30: A moderate intensity earthquake struck Jammu & Kashmir and parts of Pakistan late night on Monday. The magnitude of the earthquake was measured as 5.4 on the richter scale, said the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicentre of the earthquake is stated to be in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK). No casualties were incurred by the time preliminary reports emerged.

In the Kashmir Valley, the maximum brunt of the quake was felt in the area located roughly 140 km north of Srinagar. in neighbouring Pakistan, the tremors were felt in capital Islamabad and Rawalpindi, along with other parts of the Punjab province. Tremors of 6.4 Magnitude Struck Hindukush Region on December 20.

The tremors, reports said, originated from Mirpur in PoK, emanating from 29-km beneath the earth's surface. The reports of quake first emerged at 11:03 pm (IST).

The tremors in PoK and J&K comes days after a 6.4 magnitude quake stuck the Hindukush region on December 20. Although no casualties were reported, the impact of the earthquake was felt in Afghanistan, three provinces of Pakistan and northern India.

The region of PoK falls under the seismic belt, with the region being prone to fatal earthquakes. The last fatal tremors were reported in the region on September 24, when a total of 19 people were killed and over 300 were left injured.
