Elephant Wraps Man Defecating in Open in Trunk, Carries Him 50 Metres Away

Purulia, April 25: A man who was defecating in open invited an elephant's fury in West Bengal's Purulia district. The elephant wrapped the man, identified as 55-year-old Niranjan Sahish, in its trunk and carried away him almost 50 metres through a field. The pachyderm later dropped Sahish and disappeared into the forest in Purulia.

The incident took place in Ghatbera village on Wednesday and since then the area has been deserted. As part of his daily routine, Sahish had stepped out of his home and gone to a nearby field to defecate. When he was relieving himself in the open, he heard the elephant approaching. "I thought I was going to die and kept praying to God. When the elephant dropped me to the ground, I could not believe my luck," Sahish told Times of India. The injured Sahish was laying in the field for some time before forest department officials arrived and sent him to the primary health care centre. Subinoy Panda of Balaram forest range said the village is on an elephant route. "We often tell villagers to avoid going near the forest," Panda was quoted as saying. Sahish sustained injuries to his legs and back. He was out of danger.
