A video going viral on social media is warning merchants about a fake PhonePe application being used in markets to simulate successful UPI payments without transferring any money. On August 2, X user Anuj Agnihotri Swatntra shared a video and message cautioning shopkeepers. The post describes a clone app that closely resembles the official PhonePe interface. A customer selects goods, scans the merchant's QR code using the fake app, and shows a "payment successful" screen.

The merchant may assume the transaction is complete, especially if no immediate bank notification arrives, attributing any delay to server issues. In reality, no funds move. The X user said that he had personally fallen victim to the method. The accompanying video appears to show a confrontation inside a clothing shop, with individuals examining a phone and a QR code display. PhonePe and BharatPe Settle Trademark Dispute on Using ‘Pe’ Suffix.

Beware of Fake PhonePe App

How the Ccam Typically Works

Fraudsters install modified or cloned PhonePe apps, often obtained through unofficial channels such as Telegram groups or third-party sites. These apps replicate the official design, colours, success animations, and sometimes sounds. They do not connect to the real UPI network or banks. When a merchant’s QR is "scanned", the app simply generates a fabricated confirmation screen, frequently including a realistic-looking transaction ID.

Small shop owners, street vendors, and freelancers who rely on visual or audio confirmation are common targets. Some versions of the scam may involve playing recorded confirmation tones near sound boxes to add authenticity. In the viral video, a shopkeeper is seen explaining how the scam works. The man is heard saying that a customer came to buy clothes in Borivali and used a cloned PhonePe app to pay money. The man goes on to show how the cloned app is used to scam people, including merchants and individuals.

Broader Context of Similar Frauds

This method forms part of a wider pattern of UPI-related frauds reported across India. Cybersecurity resources and news accounts from 2025 and 2026 document multiple cases in which merchants accepted goods or services after seeing fake success screens. Official PhonePe transaction IDs are numeric and verifiable; fake ones do not appear in the recipient's app history or bank records. NPCI and payment platforms have repeatedly advised users that a genuine credit appears in the merchant’s bank statement or UPI history and is accompanied by an SMS or in-app notification from the actual payment service. Screenshots or on-screen displays shown by the payer are not reliable proof. PhonePe has pursued legal action against trademark misuse, including seeking court orders to remove content promoting fake apps, and directs users to report fraud through its official channels or the national cybercrime portal. Delhi Man Says First Dating App Date Ended in INR 20,500 Scam, Post Goes Viral.

Advice for Merchants

Experts and payment platforms recommend several verification steps:

  • Confirm the credit in the merchant’s own PhonePe or bank app before handing over goods.
  • Wait for the official SMS or push notification linked to the registered mobile number.
  • Cross-check the UPI transaction ID (UTR) against bank records if any doubt exists.
  • Avoid relying solely on a customer’s phone screen or a claimed “server delay".Victims are advised to report incidents promptly via the PhonePe app help section, the customer care numbers 080-68727374 or 022-68727374, the national cybercrime helpline 1930, or the portal cybercrime.gov.in. The post has drawn significant attention, reflecting ongoing concerns about digital payment fraud targeting small businesses that depend heavily on UPI for daily transactions. Authorities and platforms continue to urge heightened vigilance as these clone apps circulate.
