New Delhi, January 2: The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) on Tuesday expanded the home-delivery service of fuel to Chennai after its successful implementation in different cities. The IOC started delivering diesel through mobile dispensers in Chennai, which made it the first oil marketing company to initiate such a delivery mechanism in South India, reported an auto website.

R Sitharthan, executive director and state head for Indian Oil (Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry), launched the 'Fuel@Doorstep' service, which aims to deliver diesel at the doorstep of a buyer through mobile dispensers. The customer can place an order for minimum 200 litres diesel through a mobile app (Repos app). A PESO license holder can order exceeding 2,500 litres. Maha Minister Says Online Liquor Sale to Be Allowed, Then Backtracks.

Once the customer places his order, the IOC will send the fuel to the concerned dealer with details of the customer, which include name, cell phone number, quantity required, address and time of delivery. After receiving the receipt of the order from the customer, the mobile dispenser will reach the destination. The customer will get an e-bill after the ordered quantity of fuel dispensed.

The fuel delivery vehicle is fitted with a mobile dispenser and 6,000-litre fuel tank. To prevent any fateful incident during the home-delivery, equipment such as fire extinguisher and safety cones are also attached to the vehicle. The IOC had in March launched home-delivery of diesel in Pune. The government is also mulling to home deliver petrol and diesel to cut queues at fuel stations.

India currently has 61,983 petrol pumps with state-owned firms operating 90 per cent of them. The country consumed 194.6 million tonnes of fuel in 2016-17, nearly 40 per cent of which was diesel. Diesel consumption in 2016-17 was 76 million tonnes, while petrol was 23.8 million tonnes.
