Ghaziabad Family Falls Ill After Eating Birthday Cake Containing Mould and Insects at Ramnagar Resort; Probe Launched
A Ghaziabad family, including a police CO, fell ill after eating a birthday cake at a Ramnagar, Uttarakhand resort on August 6. The family alleged the cake contained mould and insects. Food safety officials have collected samples for testing, and local police have launched an investigation following the family's formal complaint against the resort.
A birthday celebration at a resort in Uttarakhand’s Ramnagar turned into a medical emergency on August 6, after several members of a family from Ghaziabad fell ill shortly after consuming a cake. The family has alleged that the cake, sourced by the resort, was contaminated with mould and insects. The incident occurred in the Dhikuli area, where the family - including a Ghaziabad Police Circle Officer (CO) - had gathered to celebrate a birthday. Following the incident, authorities from the Food Safety Department and the local police have launched formal investigations into the matter.
Allegations of Contamination
According to the complaint filed by the family, the group consisted of 16 people, including five children. They had ordered a cake costing approximately INR 2,000 through the resort management, reports India Today. Shortly after the cake was served and consumed, several guests began vomiting, leading to a state of panic at the venue. "When we looked at the cake closely, we saw mould and small insects," the complainant, identified as the CO’s husband Monty, alleged, reported Navbharat Times. He stated that the family immediately alerted the resort staff but claimed that the management failed to take the matter seriously. The affected family members required primary medical treatment for food poisoning.
Response from Authorities and Management
The family further alleged a delay in administrative support, claiming they called the police emergency helpline (112) twice late at night, but no patrol team arrived. Consequently, they submitted a formal written complaint at the Ramnagar Kotwali police station. In response to the incident:
- Food Safety Department: Officials visited the resort and collected samples of the cake and other food items served during the celebration. These samples have been sent to a laboratory to test for contamination.
- Resort Management: The management denied preparing the cake on-site, stating it had been procured from an external vendor. A spokesperson for the resort confirmed they are cooperating with the administration and conducting their own internal inquiry.
- Police Investigation: Local authorities confirmed that a probe is underway based on the family's written complaint, noting that "further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation" and the laboratory analysis of the food samples.
