Trial Run Ahead Of Official Launch
Confirming that the screen currently running at Sohna Chowk is part of a trial phase, Inspector Sandeep, official spokesperson for Gurugram Police, said, "This is basically a CSR initiative, which will be officially unveiled soon. Details about the cost, the impact, and the effectiveness will be discussed only then."
Police have not shared a timeline for the formal launch, nor have they released specifics on the cost of the system, saying that such details will be made public only at the time of the official unveiling. How The AI System Works
The AI-enabled screen identifies vehicles using ANPR technology and displays traffic-related information publicly as they cross the junction. Officials said the system is designed to function as a visible deterrent to improve compliance among vehicle owners.
The reasoning behind the design is straightforward. When a driver, or people standing nearby, sees their vehicle's registration number along with pending dues flashed on a public screen in real time, it creates immediate social pressure to clear outstanding challans rather than letting them accumulate unnoticed. Addressing A Common Complaint
The initiative responds to a long-standing grievance among vehicle owners in Gurugram. Many drivers say they do not receive timely alerts about challans issued against their vehicles and often find out about pending dues, sometimes after the amount has grown considerably, much later or only at the time of selling the vehicle.
Expansion Plans If Trial Succeeds
Officials said that if the trial at Sohna Chowk proves successful, similar smart screens could be extended to other major intersections across the city in the coming months.
