Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the state with the highest youth employability in the country, according to the recently released India Skills Report 2026. The findings highlight a significant trend in the national job market, where overall employability has climbed to 56.35 per cent, up from 54.81 per cent in 2025. The report, which assessed the job readiness of over 100,000 candidates through the Global Employability Test, indicates that Maharashtra and Karnataka closely follow Uttar Pradesh in the rankings.

Technology-focused degrees remain the most sought-after by employers. Computer Science graduates lead the pack with 80 per cent employability, followed by those in Information Technology (78 per cent) and Instrumentation Engineering (77 per cent). Beyond traditional roles, the 2026 edition of the report highlights the growing importance of the gig economy. The freelance workforce in India is projected to reach 23.5 million by 2030, with project-based hiring witnessing a 38 per cent year-on-year increase.
"The report estimates that India currently accounts for 16 per cent of the global AI talent pool, with the number of AI specialists projected to reach 1.25 million by 2027," the findings note. For the young workforce, the data suggests that while formal education remains a foundation, success in the current job market is increasingly defined by practical digital proficiency and the ability to adapt to emerging work models, such as remote employment and AI-supported roles.
