IRCTC Record-Breaking Booking: 20 Million Tickets Booked During Diwali Advance Reservation Period

IRCTC handled a record 20.06 million single-day ticket bookings during the Diwali advance reservation window, driven by system upgrades, anti-bot measures, and a shortened 60-day booking period. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has achieved a historic milestone, registering its highest-ever single-day ticket bookings as passengers flooded the portal for festive season reservations.

Record-Breaking Festive Booking Rush

Online bookings now account for 89 per cent of total train ticket transactions across the Indian Railways network. This unprecedented digital volume surged following the opening of the advance reservation window - recently shortened by Indian Railways from 120 days to 60 days - ahead of Diwali, reports ET Travel World. IRCTC Hotels Money Laundering Case: Delhi Court Orders Framing of Charges Against Lalu Prasad, Family.

On September 7, the IRCTC website handled a staggering rush, recording its highest-ever single-day milestone with 20,06,353 tickets booked during the Advanced Reservation Period (ARP). The platform maintained heavy throughput the following day, processing an additional 19,50,699 tickets on September 8. Officials noted that these figures demonstrate the robust operational capacity of the Next Generation e-Ticketing (NGeT) system to handle massive transaction volumes.

Peak Concurrent Demand Patterns

An analysis of daily booking trends indicates that traffic peaks immediately after the reservation window opens. Only 8.43 per cent to 14.14 per cent of the day's total bookings occur during the first hour between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM. The first 15 minutes, spanning from 8:00 AM to 8:15 AM, consistently experience the highest volume of concurrent demand. Despite this initial surge, more than 85 per cent of daily bookings are successfully completed later in the day. During the previous festive season, the highest single-day booking peaked at 18,40,203 tickets.

System Upgrades and Infrastructure Enhancements

IRCTC attributed the record-breaking performance to a series of modernisation measures and infrastructure updates rolled out across its network:

  • Server Capacity Expansion: Replacing legacy infrastructure with new servers has doubled the overall capacity of the ecosystem. Software optimisation and architectural improvements have further expanded system bandwidth.
  • Redesigned User Interface: Introduced on July 15, 2026, the beta version of the new user interface incorporates global design trends like Glassmorphism. A key feature allows passengers to view availability across Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier classes on a single screen without repeatedly navigating between pages.
  • Anti-BOT and CDN Deployment: Partnering with a leading technology player, IRCTC deployed advanced Anti-BOT measures that have successfully reduced malicious automated traffic by 55 to 65 per cent. A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is used to serve static content, reducing load on the core NGeT system and improving response times for verified users.

Security and Regulatory Measures

To ensure fair access during high-demand windows, IRCTC has enforced strict operational protocols:

  • Agent Restrictions: Authorised ticketing agents - including YTSKs, RTSAs, and IRCTC agents - are barred from booking ARP tickets during the first 10 minutes of the opening window, from 8:00 AM to 8:10 AM.
  • Identity Verification: Since October 12, 2025, only identity-authenticated users have been permitted to book tickets during the opening ARP window. On each ARP opening day, the NGeT system successfully processes between 1.33 crore and 1.74 crore logins alongside 17 lakh to 20 lakh bookings.
  • Anti-Fraud Crackdown: Ongoing enforcement against system misuse has resulted in the deactivation of 3.04 crore user IDs and the revalidation of 6.33 crore IDs. Authorities have also blocked 16,041 suspicious email domains and filed 592 complaints on the Cyber Crime Portal, covering 4.21 lakh suspicious PNRs. Tatkal Ticket Booking Rules Changed: Indian Railways Introduces Token System, Faster IRCTC Bookings.

As millions of passengers secure their journeys for the upcoming holiday season, these record-breaking figures and infrastructure upgrades highlight the Indian Railways' ongoing push toward a faster, more secure, and digitally resilient ticketing ecosystem.
