New Delhi, October 1: Justice Ranjan Gogoi, the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court after outgoing Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, will take over the reigns from the latter on Tuesday, October 2, 2018.

At the farewell ceremony of Justice Misra, Justice Gogoi praised his predecessor, crediting him for some of the landmark apex court judgements in the recent time. "He has continuously upheld the freedom of the individual, freedom to choose... He has supported women's rights. His words have inspired people," the judge said. CJI Dipak Misra to Retire Today, Justice Ranjan Gogoi to Take Over as New Chief Justice of India on October 3.

Brief Profile of the New Chief Justice of India:

- Justice Gogoi was born on November 18, 1954 in Assam's Guwahati. At the age of 24, he was enrolled at the Bar in the Gauhati High Court, where practised as a lawyer.

- In 2001, he was elevated as a permanent judge of the Guwahati High Court. After 9 years, he was transferred as the senior judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on September 9, 2010.

- On February 11, 2011, Justice Gogoi was elevated as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court. After 14 months, he was recommended as a judge in the top court.

- Justice Gogoi's appointment to the apex court was confirmed on April 23, 2018. In 2016, he became part of the Supreme Court's collegium -- the highest decision-making body of the top judiciary. Justice Gogoi Hails Outgoing CJI's Contribution to Civil Liberties Cases.

- Justice Gogoi's elevation as the next Chief Justice of India was recommended by the Justice Misra in July this year. After contemplating over his nomination, the Law Ministry gave the assent in September. On September 13, 2018, he was officially appointed as the 46th Chief Justice of India.

In January this year, Justice Gogoi had courted a controversy after he addressed an unprecedented press conference along with three other members of the Collegium - Justices J Chelameswar, KM Joseph and MB Lokur - accusing CJI Misra of arbitrarily exercising his power as "master of the roster".
