Karnataka Cabinet Favours INR 8-10 Hike in Nandini Milk Prices, Know What KMF Is Demanding
The Karnataka Cabinet has backed an INR 8 to INR 10 per litre hike in Nandini milk prices to support drought-hit farmers, pending Election Commission clearance due to the active Model Code of Conduct. The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) had earlier sought a price increase of up to INR 10 per litre, pointing to escalating production expenses.
The Karnataka Cabinet has indicated strong support for increasing the price of Nandini milk by INR 8 to INR 10 per litre, with a final rollout pending clearance from the Election Commission due to the ongoing Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The decision was discussed during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, where ministers emphasized that the proposed hike would help counter prevailing drought conditions and improve financial returns for dairy farmers.
Milk Price Revision and MCC Guidelines
The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) had earlier sought a price increase of up to INR 10 per litre, pointing to escalating production expenses, including higher costs for cattle feed, fodder, and transport, reports PTI. Because the Model Code of Conduct is currently active for ongoing elections to four Legislative Council seats - covering graduates' and teachers' constituencies with polling scheduled for October 23 and counting on October 27 - there was no official briefing following the meeting. However, multiple ministers confirmed that the Cabinet favored the price adjustment and authorized Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to approach the election authority for formal permission.
Key Administrative Decisions and Policy Rejections
Alongside the milk price discussions, the Cabinet addressed several major infrastructure, industrial, and administrative proposals:
- Land Denotification Rejections: The government rejected two separate proposals seeking the denotification of lands acquired by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) - covering over 362 acres for the Suvarna Karnataka Development Corridor in Shivamogga and nearly 2 acres in Harohalli, Bengaluru South.
- Judiciary Digitalisation: The Cabinet approved a INR 704-crore scheme to modernize the judicial system, which includes setting up a dedicated data centre and a disaster rehabilitation facility via the Karnataka State Data Centre (KSDC).
- Public Health Procurement: A proposal to procure essential medicines for public health hospitals at an estimated cost of INR 1,000 crore was given the green light.
- Police Commissionerate Restructuring: The cabinet reviewed plans to divide the Bengaluru City Police Commissionerate into five independent units, to be managed under the overall supervision of the Police Commissioner.
With the election code currently in place, formal announcements on the dairy price revision and administrative restructuring are expected to proceed following the conclusion of the legislative council polls on October 27, paving the way for these major policy rollouts across the state.
