Four students were injured after the main entrance gate of a government higher primary school collapsed on them in Karnataka’s Bagalkote district on Tuesday. A Class 3 student, identified as Sunema, sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to a private hospital, where she is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).

The incident occurred when the iron gate fell on students and a caretaker as they were entering the school premises. The school has more than 220 students enrolled from LKG to Class 7.

Gate Collapse During School Entry

According to information available, the accident took place when the caretaker was opening the main entrance gate. Residents said the gate suddenly came off its hinges and collapsed on those standing nearby, including four students and a caretaker.

All the injured were immediately rushed for medical treatment. Doctors have described Sunema’s condition as critical. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on what caused the gate to collapse.

History of Complaints and Safety Concerns

Villagers alleged that the entrance arch and gate were constructed around three years ago and have been a recurring safety concern since then.

They claimed the structure had collapsed on three earlier occasions. A similar incident reportedly occurred about 15 days ago, though no injuries were reported at that time.

Residents said they had repeatedly urged authorities to repair the gate, but no effective action was taken. They attributed the incident to poor construction and lack of maintenance.

The allegations have raised fresh concerns about infrastructure safety in government schools in the region.

Administrative Response

Following the incident, Block Education Officer (BEO) Jasmine visited the hospital to inquire about the condition of the injured Class 3 student.

Further investigation into the cause of the collapse is expected, along with an assessment of safety conditions at the school premises.

School infrastructure safety has been a recurring concern in several parts of India, particularly in government-run institutions where ageing or poorly maintained structures can pose risks to students. Incidents involving collapses or structural failures often lead to calls for stricter inspections and timely maintenance of school facilities.
