Kolkata Cab Strike on July 27: Ola, Uber, Rapido, InDrive Drivers to Go Offline for 12 Hours Over Fare Revision Demand

Commuters in Kolkata face major travel disruptions on Monday as app-based cab and bike taxi drivers prepare for a 12-hour strike from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The strike, called by the CITU-affiliated Kolkata Ola Uber App Cab Operators and Drivers' Union, aims to pressure aggregator platforms and state authorities to address long-standing financial and operational grievances. During the 12-hour shutdown, participating drivers across major platforms—including Ola, Uber, InDrive, Rapido, and Yatri Sathi—will go offline, severely limiting ride availability across the city during peak morning and evening rush hours.

The union has put forward an 11-point list of demands. Primary among them is an immediate upward revision of base fares, with distinct rates established for non-AC, AC, and luxury cabs to offset rising operational costs. Drivers are also calling for a strict ban on the commercial use of private vehicles and unregistered bikes on aggregator platforms. Other key issues raised include resolving chronic supply shortages at Kolkata’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations and discontinuing the requirement for mobile numbers during vehicle emissions testing.

As part of the demonstration, drivers are scheduled to gather at Ramlila Park in Moulali at 11:00 AM on Monday. From there, union members plan to conduct a protest march to the state Transport Department headquarters (Paribahan Bhawan) to submit a formal deputation detailing their demands.

Union representatives stated that repeated representations submitted to both aggregator management and government officials have failed to yield concrete action. According to the leadership, the continued neglect of driver earnings and working conditions left the union with no alternative but to proceed with the 12-hour work stoppage.
