Kolkata, July 26: A passenger's hand was ripped off after the bus in which he was travelling grazed a pillar. According to a Times of India report, the victim was standing on the footboard of a public bus on Thursday morning, and his arm ripped off after it caught in a building pillar as the bus was speeding up in a narrow lane. Two police constables rushed the victim, Utpal Karmakar to the hospital. The severed hand was carried in a plastic bag. The arm was in such a bad condition that there was no possibility that it could be reattached. Karmakar is a diabetic and this made things worse, leaving no other option but to amputate the hand.

On that fateful day, Karmakar was travelling on the bus with two of his other relatives. The bus was crowded, so he could only manage to stand on the footboard, but his other relatives jostled their way inside the bus. The accident occurred 800 metres after it left the bus depot.

Local buses in the same route speeding with each other and trying to overtake is a very common sight in Kolkata. It is one of the major cause of accidents on the roads.
