An orange alert has been issued for several districts of south Bengal, including Bankura, Birbhum, East Burdwan and West Burdwan, where heavy rain, thunderstorms and wind speeds of up to 60 kmph are likely.
Weather officials said the same system is influencing Kolkata, where rain-bearing clouds and gusty winds have already begun affecting several pockets. The wet weather is expected to persist through the weekend, with chances of evening thunderstorms and scattered showers on most days next week.
