Maharashtra FDA Suspends Licences of 2 More Mumbai Food Establishments Over Safety Lapses
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under the leadership of Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, has suspended the food licenses of two commercial food establishments in Mumbai with immediate effect due to critical hygiene and food safety violations.
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licences of two more establishments in Mumbai following inspections that found multiple alleged violations of food safety and hygiene standards. The action, announced on September 2, comes as the department under Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe continues an intensified enforcement drive across the city, according to a report.
The two establishments are Eatclub Brands Private Limited at Royal Palms in Aarey Milk Colony and Rani Diets Consultant and Service Providers in Jari Mari, Kurla West. The FDA has also initiated proceedings to suspend the licences of two other establishments in Chembur. Status Restaurant Among 7 Mumbai Establishments Facing FDA Licence Suspension, McDonald’s Colaba, Radio Club Also Hit.
Eatclub Licence Suspended With Immediate Effect
The FDA suspended the licence of Eatclub Brands Private Limited with immediate effect under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. According to the department, inspectors found inadequate arrangements for storing food, packaging material, chemicals and employees' belongings. The premises also had insufficient hand-washing and hygiene facilities, inadequate ventilation and shortcomings in pest-control measures.
The inspection further found that raw materials were not being properly checked and cleaned. The FDA also flagged a lack of protective equipment for food handlers, questionable records of employees' annual medical examinations and inadequate arrangements for handling consumer complaints. Mumbai: Ayub’s Among 4 Eateries To Lose Food Licence in Maharashtra FDA Crackdown.
Rodent Infestation Found at Kurla Establishment
The FDA also suspended the licence of Rani Diets Consultant and Service Providers in Jari Mari, Kurla West. Inspectors allegedly found rodent infestation, unhygienic cooking and storage areas, stagnant water and improper disposal of food waste. Raw meat and other high-risk food items were reportedly stored uncovered in refrigerators and freezers.
The department also cited missing or inadequate food labelling and date records, insufficient temperature controls and poor personal hygiene among food handlers. Records relating to cooking, reheating and cooling were also found to be deficient, the FDA said.
The establishment did not maintain records of periodic internal or external food-safety audits, while several mandatory documents were incomplete or unavailable. Its licence was therefore suspended with immediate effect from September 2.
Action Proposed Against Two Chembur Bakeries
The FDA has also proposed suspension proceedings against Goodluck Bakery and Stores and Ashfaque Bakery in Chembur. Inspections at the establishments allegedly found deficiencies involving food storage, pest-proofing, water testing, sanitation, temperature control, waste disposal, protective clothing and employee health records. The department has also cited shortcomings in food packaging, personal hygiene, staff training and food-safety audits at Ashfaque Bakery.
Part of Wider Mumbai Food Safety Drive
The latest action is part of a broader enforcement campaign being conducted by the Maharashtra FDA under Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. The department has recently intensified inspections of restaurants, hotels, bakeries and other food businesses across Mumbai and Maharashtra. Earlier inspections in the city had also resulted in licence suspensions and improvement notices after officials reported issues including pest infestation, poor storage, inadequate sanitation and lapses in food-handling practices.
The FDA has said establishments that fail to comply with food safety requirements will face legal action. The ongoing inspections are aimed at ensuring that food businesses meet prescribed standards for hygiene, storage, handling and documentation.
Focus on Compliance
The latest suspensions highlight the regulatory focus on basic food-safety requirements, including proper storage, pest control, employee hygiene, water quality, temperature management and maintenance of mandatory records.
While the FDA's action is based on violations recorded during inspections, the establishments remain subject to the applicable regulatory and legal processes, including opportunities to address deficiencies where permitted under the law.
