Jalandhar Commissionerate Police has apprehended Manjit Singh Bedi, a fugitive wanted in the United States in connection with a major government benefits fraud scheme. Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced the arrest on Friday, September 3, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that Bedi was taken into custody following coordination tied to international intelligence.

Bedi was recently added to the United States' Most-Wanted Fraudsters list after being accused of orchestrating a large-scale fraud involving the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). According to US federal investigators, Bedi allegedly defrauded the American government of at least USD 6,00,000. India-Born Manjit Singh Bedi Added to FBI Most Wanted Fraudsters List, USD 150,000 Reward Offered.

Authorities stated that Bedi had fled the United States by driving across the border into Canada before travelling to India earlier this year to evade prosecution. In a post on X, Gaurav Yadav said, "In a major breakthrough, Jalandhar Commissionerate Police apprehends Manjit Singh Bedi, a wanted fugitive linked to a US-based benefits fraud case".

Background and Fraud Allegations

Federal investigators in the US previously indicted Bedi on charges of wire fraud and SNAP benefits fraud. The charges stemmed from his operation of the Asian Grocery Store in Tacoma, Washington. Investigators alleged that between March 2024 and June 2025, Bedi utilised customers' Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards to process unauthorised transactions. Rather than providing eligible food items to program participants, he allegedly handed out cash while retaining half of the proceeds for himself.

The FBI had previously issued a notice offering a reward of up to USD 150,000 for information leading to his arrest and conviction. No Name Given Kamal Wanted by FBI: What Federal Agency Says About Lawrence Bishnoi Crime Group.
