Meerut, October 20: In what is likely to draw flak towards the Bharatiya Janata Party, one of their councillor in Meerut region, Manish Kumar, was caught on camera slapping a UP police sub-inspector following an altercation.

The incident broke out on Friday at Manish's restaurant, located in Kankarkheda locality of Meerut. Sub-inspector Sukhpal, along with his female friend who is a lawyer, visited the restaurant owned by the BJP leader. When Manish intervened, the matters turned worse as the spat escalated. In the brawl which broke out, the BJP councillor could be seen slapping Sukhpal at least five times before he fell on the ground.

Based on the footage, the Meerut police has registered a case against Manish Kumar. The councillor from ward no. 40 has been booked under section 395 (punishment for dacoity) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of Indian Penal Code.

Superintendent of Police, Meerut, Ranvijay Singh said an inquiry would be also be conducted against the sub-inspector as he had skipped duty hours to go for a dinner along with his friend.

Local BJP workers staged a protest outside the Kankarkheda police station, where the FIR was registered against Manish. The hotel staff, who joined the protest, said Sukhpal instigated him to attack by threatening to remove his pistol.
