Suspicious of the circumstances, police sent the body for a post-mortem examination and launched an investigation. Officers found several details did not add up, including questions over how a snake could have bitten Panwar while he was covered by a blanket. Meerut SSP Avinash Pandey said police were alerted to the death under suspicious circumstances after a snake was recovered from the victim's bed, prompting local police and a circle officer to reach the spot immediately. Investigation Traces Conspiracy To Sedatives And A Purchased Snake
Technical surveillance and a review of Damini's phone records revealed frequent contact with Tushar, alias Nikki, the driver at the couple's school. Under questioning, Tushar admitted to being in a relationship with Damini and confessed that the two had planned the murder together. According to police, the plan was carried out on Thursday night, when Panwar was given an excessive dose of sleeping pills mixed into milk, causing him to fall into a deep sleep. Two associates, identified as Sonu and Uday, then helped bring a venomous snake into the room and released it under his blanket, resulting in the fatal bite.
Investigators said Tushar admitted to buying the snake from two snake charmers. Photos of the snake, stored inside a container, were also recovered from his phone.
Insurance Payout And Prior Attempt On Victim's Life
Police said Panwar held an insurance policy worth approximately INR 20 lakh, and the accused had allegedly planned to pay Sonu and Uday INR 5 lakh from the payout for their role in the murder. Tushar reportedly told police that Damini intended to claim the insurance money before divorcing him so the two could marry.
Investigators also revealed that Tushar had made an earlier attempt on Panwar's life around 20 days before the murder, allegedly ramming him with a car. Panwar survived that incident because he was wearing a helmet at the time.
What Happens Next
The recovered snake has been sent for examination as part of the ongoing probe. SSP Avinash Pandey said the investigation is continuing and further action is being taken against those involved.
