Law enforcement authorities in Mumbai have arrested two individuals in connection with a cyber fraud case involving the scamming of a resident out of ₹4.98 lakh. The accused allegedly impersonated customer service representatives from Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) to pull off the fraud.
According to police officials, the perpetrators contacted the victim under the guise of resolving an urgent issue regarding an unpaid utility bill. They claimed that failure to process a immediate payment would result in the prompt disconnection of the victim's piped natural gas (PNG) supply. To facilitate the fraudulent payment, the scammers sent a malicious link/file to the victim's smartphone. Once the link was accessed, the fraudsters managed to compromise the victim’s mobile device, gaining unauthorized access to sensitive financial credentials and executing unauthorized bank transfers totaling ₹4.98 lakh.
Following a formal complaint lodged by the victim, cyber crime units tracked technical evidence, digital footprints, and bank account trails linked to the illicit transactions. The investigation led officers to the two suspects, who were subsequently taken into custody in Mumbai. Authorities are currently investigating whether the duo is linked to a broader network executing similar utility-bill cyber scams across the region. Growing Threat of Utility Bill Scams
The arrest comes amidst a sharp rise in utility-themed cyber crimes across urban centers. Scammers frequently target households by manufacturing a false sense of urgency—threatening immediate disruption of essential services like gas, electricity, or water—to panic victims into making hasty digital payments or downloading unverified application files (.APK files).
Cybersecurity officials and utility providers, including Mahanagar Gas Limited, routinely advise consumers never to click on external links sent via SMS or messaging platforms, avoid downloading third-party applications outside official application stores, and verify any payment demands directly through official customer support portals or billing apps.
