A Mumbai-based Marathi organisation has formally urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to appoint senior IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, while raising concerns over alleged discrimination against Marathi-speaking residents and the growing influence of outsiders in the state.

Call for Administrative Leadership
The organisation argued that Maharashtra requires a firm and politically independent administrator like Mundhe to safeguard local interests and execute policy decisions free from political pressure. The group highlighted Mundhe's recent tenure as the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), specifically commending his enforcement actions against food adulteration.
Allegations of Discrimination and Housing Concerns
In its letter to the Home Minister, the organisation alleged that Marathi residents face direct discrimination in the state's housing and job markets. It claimed that certain builders refuse to sell apartments to local buyers and called for legislative measures to guarantee housing access for locals in new real estate developments. Additionally, the group asserted that reserved playgrounds, public lands, and key properties in Mumbai are increasingly being commercialised or taken over by outside interests, arguing that a strict administrative approach is necessary to protect public assets.
Cultural Identity and Policy Criticisms
The organisation criticized the reported rollback of a proposal that would have made Marathi mandatory for drivers from outside Maharashtra operating in the state's auto and taxi sectors. It also questioned government initiatives supporting communities from other states, alleging that housing facilities are allocated to outsiders while local service workers - such as police personnel, municipal employees, mill workers, and firefighters - lack adequate housing support. The letter further contended that Maharashtra's political administration is increasingly influenced by external political figures and interests, which it claims threatens to dilute the state's Marathi cultural identity. Warning of Potential Protests
Expressing ideological alignment with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray on regional rights, "Amhi Girgaonkar" warned that failure to address these grievances could prompt widespread civic agitation, comparing potential unrest to the historic Samyukta Maharashtra movement. The organisation operates out of Girgaon, a traditional center of Marathi culture, and has a history of campaigning for local employment, linguistic preservation, and community rights.
