Mumbai recorded heavy rain for a third day, prompting an IMD orange alert for the city, Thane, and Raigad, and a red alert for Palghar. Residents across Mumbai and its neighbouring regions woke up to a third consecutive day of southwest monsoon showers on Thursday, July 2, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast continued moderate to intense spells of rain for parts of Maharashtra. The weather agency has upgraded safety warnings for the region, issuing an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, while neighbouring Palghar district has been placed under a red alert. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation as heavy downpours threaten further disruptions.

Heavy Rain Wreaks Havoc on Transit

The intensifying weather follows a day of persistent, heavy rainfall on Wednesday that severely impacted local infrastructure. According to data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai recorded an average rainfall of 49 mm between 8 AM and 6 PM. on Wednesday. Panvel School Holiday: All Schools and Colleges To Remain Closed Today; Here's Why.

The onslaught was led by the eastern and western suburbs, which registered 99 mm and 90 mm of rainfall respectively within that ten-hour window. The severe downpour resulted in immediate waterlogging across vulnerable, low-lying areas, slowing down vehicular road traffic and causing delays on suburban train lines.

High Tide Compounds Flooding Concerns

The civic body confirmed that intense rainfall combined with a 4.16-metre afternoon high tide aggravated conditions. Waterlogging complaints surfaced rapidly from multiple neighbourhoods, including Andheri, Santacruz, Khar, Bandra, Kurla, Vikhroli, Powai, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, and Mulund. Despite localised flooding, public transport services remained operational, though commuters faced notable delays. The divergence in rainfall distribution across the city was highlighted by data from the IMD’s primary observatories. Between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM on Wednesday, the Santacruz observatory logged a heavy 108 mm of rain, while the coastal Colaba observatory recorded a much lower 30 mm.

Suburbs Bear the Brunt of the Deluge

Several localised micro-stations recorded even higher numbers. In the eastern suburbs, the Tagore Nagar Municipal School in Vikhroli registered the city’s highest rainfall at 146.4 mm. It was closely followed by Paspoli Powai Municipal School at 142.8 mm and the S Ward office in Bhandup at 141.6 mm. The western suburbs saw similar intense patches. Nariyal Wadi School in Santacruz received 139.2 mm of rain, while the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Workshop in Santacruz tracked 136.4 mm. This came after a continuous stretch of wet weather where multiple pockets of Mumbai had already crossed the 100 mm mark in the 24 hours leading into Wednesday morning. Mumbai Weather Forecast & Update for Today, Thursday, 02 July 2026: Expect Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain, High of 27°C.

Safety Warnings and Outlook

Looking ahead, the IMD has predicted that heavy to very heavy rainfall will likely persist over the next 24 hours across Mumbai and its extended suburbs. The heavy downpours are expected to be accompanied by strong, gusty winds. With Palghar under a red alert and the metropolitan region experiencing waterlogging, civic authorities have advised citizens to plan their travel cautiously and avoid areas prone to severe inundation.
