The incident came into light when the victim’s mother filed a complaint after the girl narrated her ordeal to her. The man was booked under Section 354 of IPC for outraging the girl's modesty along with Sections 7 (sexual assault) and 8 (punishment for sexual assault) of POCSO Act, 2012. Reports inform that the judge considered statements of seven witnesses, including two officers of Vashi police station, the parents,  and a medical officer of NMMC.

According to the TOI report, District government pleader Sangita Phad said the judge, S B Bahalkar, also levied a Rs 25,000 penalty, which will be given to the survivor.  Phad informed that under the pretext of explaining a chapter in detail, he made the girl wait, while other students went home.
