The Supreme Court was informed today, July 31, that Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his estranged wife, Payal Abdullah (Payal Nath), have reached a comprehensive settlement to end their marriage, jointly seeking a divorce by mutual consent under Article 142 of the Constitution. Appearing before a bench comprising Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe, senior advocate Kapil Sibal stated that the couple resolved all their prolonged disputes through mediation.

During the hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal emphasised that both parties had settled their differences. "Both of them have embraced freedom. It's all settled. Lordships may grant divorce. All other matters will be withdrawn," Sibal told the court. Responding to the submission, the bench noted, "That's good. We will dispose of it on those terms." According to NDTV, the bench was informed that a formal joint application under Article 142 had been filed on July 22. Justice Narasimha stated that the Supreme Court would pass formal orders in terms of the settlement and record the mutual agreement to withdraw all pending litigations filed against each other.
