The result marked India’s first gold of the weightlifting programme, which runs from July 26 to 30. Chanu, who had been the clear favourite, completed the necessary valid lifts without pushing for her personal bests.
Background and Career Context
The 31-year-old from Manipur first competed at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, winning silver in the 48kg class. She followed with gold medals at Gold Coast in 2018 (48kg) and Birmingham in 2022 (49kg). An Olympic silver medallist from Tokyo 2020 and a multiple World Championships medallist, Chanu has shifted between the 48kg and 49kg categories in recent years.
