New Delhi, October 25: Praising the poll turnout in Block Development Council (BDC) elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to people of Jammu and Kashmir with four spoken languages in the region- English, Hindi, Urdu, and Ladakhi. In a tweet, PM Modi said this kind of news makes India proud. "For the first time since 1947, Block Development Council elections were held in Jammu, Kashmir, Leh and Ladakh on the 24th. The polls witnessed a historic turnout of 98%. There were over 1080 candidates in the fray in 310 blocks," he said.

The maiden Block Development Council elections in Jammu and Kashmir recorded a massive turnout of 98.3 percent on Thursday, October 4, with Indian National Congress, J&K National Conference, and People's Democratic Party boycotting electoral exercise after Article 370 abrogation. Srinagar recorded a turnout of 100 percent.

In the first Jammu and Kashmir polls, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was an only major party in the fray. However, it failed to resonate voters. The results were declared by Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Shailendra Kumar on Thursday. “Of total 316 blocks, polling took place in 307 blocks. Since candidates on 27 seats were elected unopposed, 280 blocks were contested amid tight security,” Kumar told the media in Srinagar.
