Google doodle is honouring Indian scientist and applied statistician Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis' on his 125th birth anniversary on June 29. The legendary scientist founded the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in 1931 and this day is marked as Statistics Day annually. To mark the occasion, the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, along with the ISI will unveil a commemorative coin of Rs 125. The event will take place in Kolkata and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will release the coin along with Rs 5 denomination coin for circulation.

The Statistics Day began in India since 2007 when the government designated a special day to honour the contribution by Mahalanobis. Each year there is a theme to this day, this year's being 'Quality Assurance in Official Statistics'. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis has made a significant contribution in the anthropometry field. He founded the Indian Statistical Institute in 1932. In 1934 he also set up the Indian Calculating Machine and Scientific Instrument Research Society.

The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) and the Department of Statistics mark celebrations for this day. There was news doing the round of the release of Rs. 125 coins but people thought it was for circulation purposes. The coin will be a commemorative coin, ones that are released by the government to honour the icons in Indian public life. Another commemorative coin India has is of Dr. B R Ambedkar, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary. The Statistics Day 2018 will mark another honour of the renowned Indian scientist and statistician.
