Pune, July 2: With over 20 fatalities already recorded, Pune continues to remain on alert as the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to heavy rainfall over the next five days. The incessant rains over the past four days has already brought life to a standstill in the city.

According to the IMD, the movement of Southwest Monsoon winds have intensified in Maharashtra, with the next five days appearing to be critical for most parts of the state, especially north Maharashtra. Mumbai, located next to Pune, has also been crippled by the torrential rainfall. Over a dozen residents have died in wall collapse incidents reports in parts of the city, including Kalyan and Malad.

Locals, considered to be the lifeline of Mumbai, is not plying between several routes as tracks have been submerged under water. The state government has asked residents to step out only if necessitated.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had already declared holidays in public schools and colleges. The private institutions have also replicated the order.

According to Skymet Weather, the rainfall system over Mumbai and adjoining region will further intensify from the night of July 3, and will continue till July 5.
