Amritsar, Sep 21: Ahead of counting of votes for Punjab Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections result, the ruling Congress has won 25 per cent of seats unopposed in Majha region. Thirty three candidates were elected unopposed to various zila parishads and 369 nominees were elected unopposed to the panchayat samitis. Of these, the Congress bagged 25 per cent seats in Majha region.

Out of 80 zones of Zila Parishads in Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Pathankot, candidates in 23 zones were elected unopposed. Similarly, in 723 zones of block samitis, 177 zones were won without election. Almost all seats were grabbed by Congress candidates, reported The Tribune. Out of 25 zila parishad zones in Gurdaspur, elections were held on 12. Of 217 zones of block samitis, the Congress bagged 143. In Tarn Taran, Congress candidates were elected unopposed on nine of 20 zones. In block samitis, 85 zones out of a total of 160 were won by the ruling party. Two zones were won unopposed by SAD candidates. In Amritsar district, which has 25 zila parishad zones, 45 candidates of the Congress won unopposed. In Pathankot, only three candidates were elected unopposed.
