Lavani dancer Radha Patil has reacted after Pune police registered a case against her and two organisers over a Dahi Handi programme allegedly held despite permission being denied. Patil said she believed the event had been permitted because police officers were present at the venue and questioned the allegations of obscenity linked to her performance.

The case was registered by Bibwewadi police against Patil, Empire Group A.K. Boys president Bhushan Abhiman Sonawane and organiser Amol Kate. Police had required artists participating in Dahi Handi programmes to submit a Rangbhoomi Prayog Parinirakshan Mandal certificate, and permission was reportedly denied after the required documentation was not submitted. Dahi Handi 2026: Netizens Slam Dance Performances to Vulgar Songs, Ask ‘Is This Maharashtra Culture?’ (Videos).

Why Was A Case Registered Against Radha Patil?

According to police and reports, the Dahi Handi event in Bibwewadi was held despite the reported denial of permission. The police had imposed conditions for cultural performances during the celebrations, including the submission of the relevant certificate by participating artists to prevent allegedly obscene dance performances.

As the required documentation was not submitted, permission for the programme was denied. Police later found that the event was nevertheless being conducted and registered a case against Patil and the two organisers.

What Did Radha Patil Say?

Patil disputed the circumstances leading to the police case and said she believed the event had permission because police personnel, including a senior officer, were present at the venue. According to her statement reported by Loksatta, she said she had submitted the receipt for her certificate at the police station and that her manager had been at the venue from around 2 pm.

She also said organisers came to her vanity area and asked her to begin the show. Since a police officer was present at the venue, she said she believed the programme had been authorised. Patil further maintained that she does not perform without permission and questioned why the case had been registered against her.

‘Saree Shows Waist, What Is Obscene?’

Patil also responded to criticism over alleged obscene gestures during the performance. “Saree Shows Waist, What Is Obscene?” she questioned, arguing that the appearance of the waist while wearing a saree should not automatically be considered obscene.

She also questioned whether she was being targeted because of her surname and suggested that her increasing popularity could be a factor behind the controversy, according to Loksatta.

Police have maintained that the event was held without the required permission. Reports said the organisers had been asked to provide authorised documents or the relevant certificate for the performances. After these requirements were not met, permission was denied. Despite this, the programme allegedly went ahead, prompting Bibwewadi police to register the case. The investigation is continuing.

Along with Patil, police have booked Empire Group A.K. Boys president Bhushan Abhiman Sonawane and event organiser Amol Kate. The case relates to the alleged unauthorised conduct of the Dahi Handi programme and the conditions imposed on performances during the event. Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the programme and the allegations made against those involved.
