The injured guard, Digvijay Singh Tomar, was initially treated at the district hospital before being referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal after his condition became critical, according to officials. Inmate Allegedly Tried To Open Main Gate
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Pratibha Sharma told PTI that the prisoner, identified in the initial reports as Nilesh Singh and in subsequent reports as Nilesh Thakur, was lodged in the jail in an attempted murder case. During the Raksha Bandhan celebrations, the prisoner reportedly reached the main gate carrying a basket of fruits and pressured guard Digvijay Singh Tomar to open the gate.
When the guard refused, the prisoner allegedly fired at him with a country-made pistol concealed in or obtained through the fruit basket, according to the initial police account. The bullet struck Tomar in the left side of his back, causing him to collapse with serious injuries. Acting superintendent R K Choure and other guards rushed to the spot after being alerted and apprehended the attacker, police said. A case was subsequently registered and an investigation launched. “This is a very serious matter. Security arrangements inside the jail are being monitored. The role of the jail guards is also being investigated,” Sharma said.
Superintendent Suspended Over Negligence
State Director General of Prisons Varun Kapoor said Choure was suspended with immediate effect after serious negligence was found in connection with the incident. During his suspension, Choure was to be posted at jail headquarters. Inspector General of Police (IG-Prisons) Sanjay Pandey was entrusted with the inquiry, with further action to be taken after his report, officials said.
The central question for investigators was how a country-made pistol entered a secured prison and whether anyone inside or outside the facility helped facilitate its entry. At the time, Kapoor said the prisoner had told investigators during initial questioning that someone from outside had thrown the pistol inside the jail.
“The clear picture would only be known after the investigation,” Kapoor said. Choure had earlier said he had no knowledge of how the weapon entered the facility. He had expressed suspicion that it could have been concealed in baskets of sweets and fruits brought into the jail for the Raksha Bandhan celebrations.
CCTV Footage Adds New Details
A September 11 report said CCTV footage from inside the jail had emerged, showing the prisoner approaching guard Digvijay Singh Tomar with the firearm and becoming involved in a confrontation near the main gate. Police said the footage was being examined as part of the investigation into the alleged escape plan.
According to the latest police account reported locally, investigators believe the attempt to escape was planned in advance. The investigation reportedly found that the firearm and ammunition were arranged through people outside the jail rather than simply being hidden in a fruit basket.
Police have named Nilesh alias Chhotel, Rahul Bedi and Shubham Bedi as accused in the wider case, according to the latest reports. Three of them are reported to be in custody, while Nilesh’s maternal uncle, Supiyar Singh, has been described as a fugitive whom police are seeking.
Probe Focuses On How Weapon Entered Jail
The latest investigation has therefore shifted beyond the shooting itself to the alleged network that enabled the firearm to reach the prisoner. Police are examining the role of other people, the security arrangements at the jail and the circumstances surrounding the alleged escape plan. The CCTV footage is also expected to help investigators reconstruct the sequence of events at the main gate.
The incident has raised questions about security checks inside the Raisen district jail, particularly how an undertrial prisoner was able to obtain a firearm and use it during an attempted escape. The departmental and police inquiries are expected to establish individual responsibility and determine whether further action is warranted.
