Chennai, October 9: Nakkeeran Gopal, the chief editor of Tamil magazine Nakkeeran, was arrested by the Chennai City Police on Tuesday morning. Nakkeeran Gopal is reportedly booked on sedition charges. He was taken into custody from the Chennai airport after a complaint was filed against him by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit's office.

Although the Chennai police have not revealed the reason behind Nakkeeran Gopal's arrest and the details of the complaint filed by the Raj Bhawan, reports suggest the veteran journalist was arrested for Governor Purohit and his office to a recent university sex scandal. Gopal was detained at the Chintadripet police station. Tamil Nadu College Sex Scandal: CB-CID Moves HC for Voice Test on Woman Teacher Allegedly Involved in Racket.

The reports say Gopal claimed the main accused in the scandal, Nirmala Devi, an assistant professor of Devanga Arts College in Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district, visited Raj Bhawan multiple times. She was arrested on the charge of suggesting to some girl students that they yield themselves to keep the "higher-ups" happy so that the college gets facilities. She is heard making the demand in an audio clip that went viral on the social media.

In the audio clip, Nirmala Devi was heard saying that she was on the dais moving around at a function in which the Governor was present, and she has access to top officials. However, no names were said in that audio clip. In April, Governor Purohit ruled out his resignation in the wake of the allegations of his involvement in the sex scandal.
