Haryana authorities have multi-layered concrete barricades, iron fencing, and heavy security forces at the Shambhu border to prevent thousands of farmers from marching toward the national capital. The security measures follow a call by several farmer unions to hold a massive mahapanchayat (grand assembly) at Delhi’s Kisan Ghat in protest against the proposed India–United States trade agreement.
The Shambhu border point, which connects Punjab and Haryana along the National Highway, has seen a heavy deployment of Haryana Police and personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). Heavy machinery was deployed to put concrete blocks into place, while security personnel were stationed with riot control gear to manage traffic diversions and prevent any unauthorized movement toward Delhi. Protesting farmer leaders, including Sarwan Singh Pandher, stated that the movement is a peaceful demonstration directed specifically against the Central government’s proposed trade terms with Washington, which unions argue could adversely affect domestic agricultural prices and small-scale producers. Union leaders clarified that their opposition is strictly against federal trade policies rather than state law enforcement.
Local authorities in Ambala district have enacted prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to prohibit public gatherings and marches without explicit administrative clearance. Additionally, police officials reiterated that no permission had been granted by Delhi Police for a large-scale gathering in the capital, citing potential public disruption and traffic congestion.
The Shambhu border has frequently served as a central focal point for agricultural protests over recent years. Beyond current concerns regarding international trade agreements, farmer organizations have consistently pressed the central government for a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops, farm debt waivers, and reforms in agricultural credit systems.
