At least 17 passengers were injured and more than 20 others are feared trapped after a Tamil Nadu government bus lost control, overturned, and plunged into the Azhutha Kanni river near Vettaikarankulam in Tenkasi district on Sunday. The vehicle, operating on the Tenkasi-Tirunelveli route, was carrying 32 passengers when the accident occurred. According to local police, the bus veered off the road and dropped into the riverbed, approximately 30 feet below road level.
Emergency units, including personnel from the Tenkasi Fire and Rescue Services department, were deployed to the site immediately following the incident to conduct search and rescue operations. Rescuers are currently working to extricate individuals remaining inside the damaged vehicle. The bus driver, identified as 49-year-old Sivasakthi, sustained severe injuries in the crash and was transferred to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for specialized medical care. Officials from the Courtallam Police Station have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, including potential mechanical failure or driver error. Rescue operations remain active at the scene.
