The Supreme Court of India heavily criticized comedian Samay Raina and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia on Tuesday for failing to comply with its previous legal directives. The apex court stated that Raina had "taken the court for a ride" and "brazenly violated" its orders, subsequently imposing a hefty financial penalty for the non-compliance.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant, Joymalya Bagchi, and V. Mohan expressed strong disapproval of the digital creators' conduct. Labeling them as "self-styled youth icons," the court underscored that popularity does not grant a license to disregard the judicial process or evade accountability. ‘Vachindamma Girl’ Geni Kamki’s Cute Request to Samay Raina for Boyfriend Wins Hearts After Viral ‘India’s Got Latent S2’ Appearance (Watch Video).
The court’s sharp reprimand came after it was revealed that assertions regarding the submission of a compliance affidavit did not match the official judicial records. While the defense claimed that the documentation had been submitted, the bench noted that no such affidavit was present on record, concluding that the court was being actively misled.
Consequently, the Supreme Court ordered Samay Raina to pay a fine of ₹10 lakh, directing that the amount be deposited within a two-week window. The bench has granted a final opportunity of 15 days to properly file the required compliance affidavit.
Meanwhile, co-petitioner Ranveer Allahbadia received a conditional variance in his interim restrictions. While he was strongly reprimanded alongside Raina, the top court permitted Allahbadia to resume hosting his popular talk show, The Ranveer Show, provided he strictly adheres to the ongoing legal obligations and guidelines. The legal battle stems from an episode of Samay Raina’s YouTube talent show, India’s Got Latent, broadcast earlier. During the episode, guest panelist Ranveer Allahbadia made remarks that triggered widespread public outrage and allegations of promoting obscenity.
The fallout from the broadcast resulted in multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) being registered against Allahbadia, Raina, and other associated individuals across several states, including Maharashtra and Assam. In response to the escalating legal pressure and public backlash, Raina temporarily archived all episodes of the show from his channel.
Allahbadia subsequently moved the Supreme Court seeking protection from coercive police action and the consolidation of the scattered FIRs. While the court initially granted interim protection against arrest, it explicitly warned the creators that freedom of speech does not shield individuals from violating basic societal standards or turning public digital platforms into spaces for vulgarity.
The case highlights growing judicial scrutiny over the lack of regulation in the digital creator economy and the responsibilities horizontal to high-reaching social media influencers in India.
