The sisters were part of a group of more than 100 pilgrims who arrived in Badrinath on September 4 to attend a religious discourse (Bhagwat Katha). According to police and disaster response officials, four women from the group entered the designated women's section of the hot spring around 4:30 AM to complete a customary vow of taking 108 continuous dips before offering prayers at the main temple. Initial police findings indicate that the sisters had completed roughly 50 dips when their health abruptly deteriorated. Family members present noted that after male relatives left for temple prayers, the women accelerated the pace of their dips. The physical strain, combined with thermal exposure and low atmospheric oxygen levels in the high-altitude zone, reportedly caused severe breathlessness, leading both women to lose consciousness and collapse into the water.
Surrounding pilgrims pulled the women out of the pool, while police personnel and locals administered CPR at the site. Both sisters were rushed to the Badrinath Primary Health Centre, where attending medical officers declared them dead on arrival. Badrinath Police Station In-Charge Mahadev Uniyal confirmed that police initiated formal inquest procedures following the incident. However, the grieving family requested an exemption from post-mortem examinations, stating their intention to transport the bodies to Haridwar for final rites. Administrative formalities and clearance processes are underway to hand over the bodies to the family.
