An assistant professor has been arrested in connection with the alleged question paper leak at Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University (VMSB-UTU), prompting the cancellation of two B.Tech semester examinations. Police action followed an internal university inquiry, which found that confidential examination questions were allegedly shared with students before the tests. The university has also registered an FIR, barred the accused from examination-related work for seven years and announced fresh examinations in August.
Assistant Professor Arrested Following University Complaint
According to the police, the accused, identified as an assistant professor associated with a private engineering college affiliated with UTU, was arrested after the university lodged a complaint regarding the alleged leak. Investigators allege that the professor, who was part of the question paper-setting process, circulated questions to students through a WhatsApp group before the examination. Police are examining digital evidence and investigating whether any other individuals were involved in the alleged breach of examination confidentiality. Two B.Tech Examinations Cancelled
Following the inquiry, the university cancelled the Machine Learning for Internet of Things and Electromagnetic Field Theory examinations conducted during the 2025–26 even semester.
University authorities said the decision was taken after finding prima facie evidence that the confidentiality of the examination process had been compromised. The re-examinations are scheduled to be held in the third week of August.
University Takes Disciplinary Action
In addition to filing an FIR, the university has barred the accused faculty member from participating in any examination-related activities for seven years. Officials described the alleged sharing of question papers as a serious violation of academic integrity and said the institution would strengthen security measures governing the preparation, handling and distribution of examination papers. Police said the investigation is ongoing and are verifying electronic communications and other evidence to establish how the alleged paper leak occurred. Authorities are also examining whether any students or others may have benefited from the leaked questions.
The alleged paper leak comes amid heightened national scrutiny of examination security following recent controversies involving competitive examinations. Although the UTU case is unrelated to the ongoing NEET controversy, it has renewed concerns over safeguarding the integrity of university examinations and preventing breaches that could affect students' academic futures.
